The ruling coalition, comprising the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD), the ANO 2011 (meaning "Yes 2011") and the Christian Democratic Union-Czech People's party (KDU-CSL), retained a majority in the 81-member Senate. It won 21 of the 27 seats up for election in 2014, and now has 48 seats in all. However, the CSSD no longer holds the Senate majority on its own, as the party's share of seats went down from 46 to 33. The ANO, led by Finance Minister Andrej Babis, entered the Senate for the first time, taking four seats. The KDU-CSL and its allies took seven seats. Six other parties and a coalition took one seat each.
CSSD leader Bohuslav Sobotka was appointed Prime Minister by President Milos Zeman in January 2014, three months after elections to the Chamber of Deputies. He promised to boost the economy by rolling back austerity measures implemented by the previous governments, and raising pensions and the minimum wage. |
