Purpose of elections |
The 2012 elections were the fourth in six years. The Emir dissolved the outgoing legislature on 6 December 2011 following a political stalemate over allegations of high-level corruption. Opposition forces
which promised ' reform and fighting corruption'
were victorious in the elections
winning a total of 34 seats
up from 20. Sunni candidates won a total of 23 seats
up from nine; and seven Shiites
which lost two seats. Pro-government forces - including the National Islamic Alliance (Shiite)
the Democratic Forum (liberal) and the National Action Bloc - and two independent candidates took the remaining 16 elected seats. Up to 15 members of the Cabinet also sit in parliament. |
