Parliament name (generic / translated) Landtag / Diet

BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 3 February 2013
Purpose of elections The parties in the outgoing government took 18 of the 25 seats at stake. The Patriotic Union (VU) took eight seats, down from 13. Its coalition partner, the Progressive Citizens' Party (FBP), took ten, losing one. Both parties presented their new premiership candidates: Mr. Thomas Zwiefelhofer (VU) and Mr. Adrian Hasler (FBP).

A newly formed group, "The Independents" (DU), led by banker and former VU member Mr. Harry Quaderer, won an unexpected third position, upsetting the country's traditional three-party politics. It took four seats, one more than the Free List. The DU promised to provide affordable housing and balance the budget without raising taxes. The Free List campaigned to reduce the Prince's veto powers.

Four of the five outgoing ministers, including Prime Minister Klaus Tschütscher (VU), did not run in the 2013 elections. Prime Minister Klaus Tschütscher had pledged to transform the country from "a tax oasis" to "an oasis of stability". However, amid the eurozone crisis, the outgoing government had faced a budget deficit.
