Purpose of elections The National Front (BN) - a 13-party ruling coalition comprising Prime Minister Najib Razak’s United Malays National Organization (UMNO) - took 133 seats in the 222-member House of Representatives, down from 140 seats in 2008 and 199 in 2004. The three-party opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat (People’s Alliance, see note), led by former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim took the remainder, pledging to end corruption. It won a majority of popular votes, with 51%, reportedly drawing strong support from the Chinese community in urban areas. Mr. Anwar accused the BN of electoral fraud, an accusation denied by the government.

On 6 May, Mr. Najib was sworn in as Prime Minister by King Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and subsequently named a 57-member Cabinet, one of the world’s largest.
