BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 13 May 2013
Purpose of elections Parties supporting President Benigno Aquino were victorious in the mid-term elections, making him the country’s only President to enjoy a clear majority in both chambers of the Congress since democracy was restored in 1986.

In the Senate race, the "Team PNoy" coalition (see note), led by President Aquino’s Liberal Party (LP), took nine of the 12 renewed seats in the 24-member Senate. The remaining seats in the Senate went to the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), led by former President Joseph Estrada. In the elections to the House of Representatives, unofficial sources indicate that the LP took over 110 seats. Other pro-presidential parties reportedly took over 80 seats and the UNA, ten.

During the election campaigning, the LP pledged to continue the President’s reforms to tackle corruption and poverty and to create jobs and sustain economic growth. UNA leader Estrada was elected Mayor of the capital Manila, pledging to help improve the lives of the city's poor.

Note:
In the Senate elections, the "Team PNoy" coalition comprised the LP, Nationalista Party (NP), the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), Struggle of Democratic Filipinos (LDP), Akbayan and the National Unity Party. In the House race, the LP was not in coalition with these parties.
