BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 13 July 2014
Purpose of elections The Miro Cerar Party (SMC), established by law professor Miro Cerar in June 2014, came in first, taking 36 seats in the 90-member National Assembly. Former Prime Minister Janez Jansa's Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) followed with 21 seats. SDS leader Jansa campaigned from prison, where he began a two-year sentence for bribery in June 2014. The Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia (DeSUS), led by outgoing Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec, came in third with 10 seats.

The 2014 early elections were triggered by the resignation of Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek on 8 May, after she lost the leadership of the "Zoran Jankovic List - Positive Slovenija" to Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovic. She had been the country's first woman prime minister since March 2013, succeeding Mr. Jansa. Shortly after assuming office, she announced the suspension of the sale of 15 State-owned companies that had been decided by the previous administration. She led the Alliance of Alenka Bratusek (ZAAB) in the 2014 elections, which became the smallest parliamentary party with four seats.

During the election campaign, the SMC promised to cut the country's budget deficit to 3 per cent of GDP by the end of 2015 and to liberalize the economy. SMC leader Cerar, who is the author of the first Slovenian Constitution after independence in 1991, promised to strengthen the rule of law and counter corruption more effectively. He said privatization would be a priority, while stating that key sectors must remain under State control. SDS called on voters' support for freedom and justice, arguing that the justice system is controlled by remnants of the former Communist regime. DeSUS' campaign focused on preserving the current level of pension rights. Other parties' campaigns, from both left and right, criticized the SMC's platform for being too vague.
