Purpose of elections First-ever elections for the Senate were held for 57 members indirectly elected by Commune/Sangkat Councilors. All the 61 members of the (previous) first Senate were appointed by the King or by the political parties in proportion to their seats in the National Assembly.

Official results of 29 January 2006.
- Eight women were indirectly elected;
- no women was appointed by the King;
- one woman was nominated by the National Assembly.

United National Front for an Independent Neutral Peaceful and Co-operative Cambodia (FUNCINPEC) is a member of the ruling coalition led by the Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

In all 8 women were elected:
- 6 women of 45 MPs from the CPP
- 2 women of 10 MPs from the FUNCINPEC
- No women were elected from the SRP

Mr. Chea Sim was re-elected as Speaker (President) on 20 March 2006.
