Purpose of elections Indirect elections for 42 seats in the Senate.
Indirect elections were held for 42 seats in the Senate (six seats each for seven departments). The statutory number of members has increased from 66 to 72 to include six senators from the newly established department of Pointe-Noire. The 2008 elections were also held in the department of Pool where elections have never taken place since the inception of the Senate in 2002.

Note on the number of women:
Following the renewal of parliamentary seats in August 2008 there were nine women out of a total of 70 members. There are currently two vacant seats.
