Structure of parliament Unicameral
BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 23 August 2017
Purpose of elections The ruling Popular Liberation Movement of Angola (MPLA) retained its majority in the 220-member National Assembly, but lost 25 seats. In accordance with the 2010 Constitution (see note), the MPLA's presidential candidate, Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço (MPLA), became the new President. The main opposition, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), increased its share from 32 to 51 seats. During the election campaign, the major parties focused on agriculture, infrastructure (energy and water), as well as job creation and education.

On 8 September, four opposition parties including UNITA filed an appeal at the Constitutional Court, demanding the annulment of the results. On 13 September, the Constitutional Court rejected the appeal, stating the evidence presented by the UNITA did not prove irregularities or biases in the electoral process.

On 26 September, Mr. Gonçalves Lourenço was sworn in as the country's new President, succeeding Mr. José Eduardo dos Santos, who had been in power since 1979. Following day, Mr. Isaias Samakuva, UNITA's leader since 2003, resigned, stating that a new leader should take the party forward through the “new political cycle”.

The 2010 Constitution discontinued direct presidential elections.
