The seminar is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and will take place on 10 October 2013 at the CICG, in Geneva, Switzerland.
This year, the seminar will focus on two themes: “Nationality Rights” and “Economic Rights”. A brief overview of the nationality rights covered by CEDAW and the inherent obligations of States parties to the Convention will introduce the first theme. Discussions will centre on the main challenges to ending discrimination against women in accessing and transmitting nationality, on recent trends and the role of parliamentarians in this regard.
The second theme will provide a brief overview of how economic rights are dealt with in CEDAW. The presentation will be followed by discussions on specific issues such as economic empowerment and independence, access to land, property, credit and inheritance. The focus of these discussions will be on main challenges, good practices and the role of parliamentarians.
Several experts, including members of the Committee and a member of parliament will facilitate the seminar.
