The Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO), which has been in power since independence in 1975, retained the majority in the 250-member National Assembly but saw its share of seats reduced from 191 to 144 . Its main rival, the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), increased from 51 to 89 seats. The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM, a splinter party from RENAMO) more than doubled its share from eight to 17 seats. The former Defense Minister Filipe Nyusi (FRELIMO) won the presidential elections defeating RENAMO leader Afonso Dhlakama. Mr. Nyusi is due to succeed outgoing President Armando Guebuza (FRELIMO), who was constitutionally barred from seeking a third presidential term, in January 2015.
The 2014 elections followed a new peace deal between the FRELIMO government and RENAMO on 5 September 2014. Although the two parties had signed a peace deal in 1992 after a 16-year civil war, RENAMO leader Dhlakama took to the bush again in October 2012. He reappeared from RENAMO military bases in the Gorongosa district just a few weeks ahead of the polling day.
During the election campaign, FRELIMO ran on the government's record, promising continuity. Mr. Nyusi presented himself as "the bee that will make honey for all", referring to his name which means "bee" in the local Maconde language. RENAMO leader Dhlakama promised to establish a system that would allow coal miners to benefit from the resources that they extracted. He accused the government of rigging the polls and rejected the election results, but ruled out a return to insurgency. MDM leader Daviz Simango promised to work for economic development and job creation. |
