Constituencies 9 multi-member (10 seats) constituencies corresponding to the provinces.
Voting system : Indirect election.
The parties represented in each of the nine provincial legislatures nominate 10 Senators based on the percentage of votes they received in the provincial elections. Six of these are permanent delegates and four are special rotating delegates who are appointed on an ad-hoc basis.
Vacancies arising between general elections are filled by persons belonging to the same party.

- age: 18 years
- South African citizenship
- qualified to be member of National Assembly.
Incompatibilities - any office of profit under the State
- President of the Republic.
Candidacy requirements - monetary deposit of R25,000 (national election) and R5,000 (provincial election) required.
