The ruling Democratic Party of Turkmenistan (DPT) remained the largest party in the 125-member Assembly in the second multi-party elections since the country's independence in 1991. President Berdymukhammedov's son, Serdar, was re-elected to the Assembly, and appointed a Deputy Foreign Minister on 30 March. On 2 April, the DPT elected Mr. Ata Serdarov, Ambassador to Belgium and to the EU, as its new leader.
No official reasons were given for holding early elections, which were constitutionally due by December. The elections took place amid an economic crisis, and were the first to be held since the 2016 constitutional amendments that removed the 70-year upper age limit for presidential candidates and extended the presidential term from 5 to 7 years. The incumbent President, in power since 2007, was re-elected in February 2017. |
