Purpose of elections The members of the outgoing coalition won the 2012 elections by a large majority. They took 112 of the 131 seats at stake, compared to 106 in 2007. The Armenian National Congress became the largest opposition party, taking seven seats.

The governing coalition is led by President Serzh Sargsyan's Republican Party of Armenia. Both the governing parties and the opposition forces presented similar economic programmes for the 2012 parliamentary elections, calling for more active development of domestic industry and continued cooperation with Russia and the international financial organisations.

The opposition parties alleged mass fraud outside polling stations, insisting that the ruling coalition had handed out gifts to voters during the election campaigning. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) stated that the elections had been largely peaceful, but noted that shortcomings undermined confidence in the process, and questioned the accuracy of voter lists and the potential for their misuse.
