BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 12 May 2013
Purpose of elections No party won an outright majority in the 240-member National Assembly. The Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria Party (GERB) remained the largest force, winning 97 seats. The Coalition for Bulgaria (CB, led by the Socialist Party) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS, which represents minorities, mainly of Turkish ethnicity) followed, taking 84 and 36 seats respectively.

Nationwide protests against austerity, high electricity prices and corruption had forced Prime Minister Boyko Borissov (GERB) to resign in February 2013. After unsuccessful attempts to form a new coalition government, President Rosen Plevneliev called early elections for May. During the election campaign, the GERB promised to allocate EU funding for the creation of over 12,000 new businesses. The CB promised to create at least 250,000 jobs during the term of the government. The DPS promised to reduce the number of MPs.

After the GERB failed to put together a coalition, the CB and the DPS formed a new coalition government in late May under the premiership of Mr. Plamen Oresharski, nominated by the Socialist Party.
