No party secured an outright majority in the parliamentary elections held in parallel with the presidential polls. Outgoing Speaker Juan Orlando Hernández's National Party (PN) won 48 of 128 seats at stake. The Liberty and Refoundation Party (LIBRE) and the Liberal Party followed, winning 37 and 27 seats respectively. The LIBRE comprises former members of the Liberal Party and is led by Ms. Xiomara Castro, wife of former President Manuel Zelaya. Mr. Zelaya had been ousted in 2009, with the backing of the PN and the Liberal Party. The Anti-Corruption Party led by a TV journalist, Mr. Salvador Nasralla, took 13 seats.
Honduras has the highest homicide rate in the world according to the United Nations. Major parties pledged to tackle crime. Ms. Castro's LIBRE criticized the PN government led by President Porfirio Lobo of failing to curtail violence. She promised to use a community police force to tackle local crime and deploy more soldiers to the borders to combat drug trafficking. Mr. Hernández's PN pledged to put more soldiers and police on the streets. Mr. Hernández won the presidential elections and was sworn into office on 27 January 2014. |
