| Purpose of elections |
The 2013 elections were the first to be held under the 2012 Constitution which provided for a bicameral parliament comprising a 100-member Chamber of Deputies (replacing the previous House of Peoples' Representatives of the same size) and a 76-member Senate. Fifty-six senators are directly elected while 15 are appointed by the President of the Republic. In addition there are five ex officio members.
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema's Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) and its allies (see note) swept 99 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 54 of the 55 directly elected seats in the Senate. The PDGE promised balanced and harmonious development for Equatorial Guinea so as to make it an emerging country by 2020. The Convergence for Social Democracy (CPDS) took the remaining seat in both chambers, promising to defend workers rights and provide a free public health system.
