Mandate The Committee's mandate is to examine draft legislation relating to human rights and to scrutinize the activities of the government and other State bodies in this field. It is competent to deal with written or oral complaints.
Membership
Working methods The Committee sits in ordinary session once a week, and in extraordinary session whenever its President deems it necessary. It may hold hearings and carry out on-site investigations. It may further appoint subcommittees to look into matters requiring more in-depth research.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies
Relations with external bodies Relations with the Government are conducted through the National Congress. Given that the Congress is responsible for, among other duties, overseeing the Executive, the latter must provide all information requested by deputies. Any government official failing to do so may be impeached. The National Human Rights Commission and other specialised human rights bodies and organizations may be heard by the Committee which may seek their advice on matters pertaining to particular cases.
