Parliament name (generic / translated) Sakartvelos Parlamenti / Parliament Structure of parliament Unicameral BACKGROUND Dates of election / renewal (from/to) (from/to) 8 October 2016 30 October 2016 Timing and scope of renewal Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili's Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia (see note) won 115 seats in the 150-member Parliament, up from 85 that it took in 2012. It thus secured the three-fifths majority required to adopt constitutional amendments. The opposition United National Movement (UNM), founded by former President Mikheil Saakashvili, fell from 65 to 27 seats. The UNM was led by Mr. Davit Bakradze, replacing Mr. Saakashvili who became governor of Ukraine's Odessa region in May 2015 (and lost his Georgian citizenship). The Alliance of Patriots of Georgia, a pro-Russian party, took six seats. The 2016 elections were the first to be held under President Georgy Margvelashvili (independent, backed by the Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia). Since the presidential election in October 2013, there have been three prime ministers: the founder of the Georgian Dream coalition, Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, resigned in November 2013; his successor Mr. Irakli Gharibashvili resigned in December 2015 and was followed by Mr. Kvirikashvili. During the 2016 election campaign, Prime Minister Kvirikashvili promised to boost economic and cultural ties with Russia and to work for constitutional amendments. The UNM pledged to prevent one party rule in Georgia. Note: The Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party was part of the "Georgian Dream coalition" that won the previous elections in 2012 and which initially comprised six parties, listed below.
