The Christian Social Party (PCS/CSV) remained the largest party in parliament, taking 23 seats in the 60-member Chamber of Deputies. Following the elections, three other parties began coalition talks: the Socialist Workers' Party (POSL/LSAP, 13 seats, a former coalition partner of the PCS/CSV), the Democrat Party (PD/DP, 13 seats) and the Greens (DEI GRÉNG), six seats). On 25 October, Grand Duke Henri invited PD/DP leader, Mr. Xavier Bettel, to form a coalition government.
During the election campaign, the PCS/CSV focused on the long experience of Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, in post since 1995. The PCS/CSV had held the premiership for all but five years since its inception in 1944. Mr. Bettel, the PD/DP Mayor of the city of Luxembourg, said it would be possible to undertake real reforms with a new government.
The 2013 elections took place early, following scandals related to the country's State Information Services (SREL). The PCS/CSV's then coalition partner, the POSL/LSAP, accused Prime Minister Juncker of mishandling alleged misconduct by the SREL. Before the no-confidence motion against the government came to a vote, the Prime Minister promised to hold early elections in October. The Grand Duke subsequently announced the dissolution of the Chamber, effective as of 7 October. |
