Purpose of elections The Georgian Dream coalition led by Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili won the elections taking 85 of the 150 seats at stake, thereby ending the nine-year rule of President Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement.

On 25 October, the newly elected Parliament - now based in Kutaisi in western Georgia - approved the cabinet headed by Mr. Ivanishvili (see note). He pledged to maintain President Saakashvili's pro-Western foreign policy and continue efforts to join NATO and the European Union, but at the same time seek to restore economic and cultural ties with the Russian Federation.
