On 25 October, the newly elected Parliament - now based in Kutaisi in western Georgia - approved the cabinet headed by Mr. Ivanishvili (see note). He pledged to maintain President Saakashvili's pro-Western foreign policy and continue efforts to join NATO and the European Union, but at the same time seek to restore economic and cultural ties with the Russian Federation.
Note:
Mr. Ivanishvili did not stand in the 2012 parliamentary elections because he had lost his Georgian citizenship in October 2011, due to his French citizenship.
